Belt Slipping or Sticking
The most common commercial treadmill complaint. A belt that slips under foot-strike or sticks during acceleration is dangerous. The cause is usually a worn belt, inadequate lubrication under the deck, or a misaligned belt tracking off-center. Surtech technicians inspect the belt condition, re-lubricate the deck, re-tension and re-center the belt, and replace the belt and deck if wear is beyond service. Most belt service calls take 45–90 minutes on site.
Motor and Controller Failure
Drive motors on high-usage commercial treadmills typically last 3–7 years before needing service or replacement. Symptoms include speed fluctuations, sudden stops, burning smell, or complete failure to start. Motor controller boards are also a common failure point — often showing as error codes on the console. Console and Display Errors
Non-responsive touchscreens, error codes (E1, E2, Err, LS, etc.), speed or incline not responding, and heart rate monitor failures are all console or wiring issues. Deck Wear and Resurfacing
Commercial treadmill decks absorb years of impact and eventually develop low-friction dead spots. A worn deck causes belt slippage and premature motor wear. We resurface or replace decks based on measured wear — extending the machine's useful life significantly.
Incline Motor Failure
Incline not responding, stuck at a fixed grade, or grinding when adjusting — these are incline motor or worm gear failures. We replace incline motors for all commercial brands.

The single most effective thing you can do for commercial treadmill longevity is put them on a quarterly PM plan. Each PM visit includes deck lubrication, belt inspection and tensioning, drive motor and controller check, incline calibration, safety key and stop function verification, and console diagnostics. Most treadmill failures are predictable and preventable — lubrication deteriorates, belts stretch, motors accumulate heat stress. Quarterly PM catches all of it before it becomes a breakdown.
